The striped sunflower seeds are a good source of fiber, Vit E and several Vit B's. They also contain magnesium, copper, thiamine and folic acid. They are high in poly unsaturated fatty acids and low in saturated fats. I do think it helps their coats. Most of the rabbits hull the seeds (meaties). A few of the undiscerning individuals (also known as piggies) eat both seed and hull. I don't feed the black oil sunflower seeds, only the striped ones. Only about a 10-12 seeds are put on top of their grain in the feedbowl.
The oatmeal used is plain oatmeal, you don't have to buy the more expensive organic unless you choose to. The rabbits don't care one way or another. Watch what you are buying NEVER buy Quick Oats. The plain oatmeal may be titled Old Fashioned Oatmeal on store containers, that is fine. Most grocery stores sell Quaker Oats or their store brand Old Fashioned Oatmeal in cardboard tube style containers in the cereal aisle, usually on the bottom shelf. You can recycle the cardboard tubes for many uses. Currently keeping some sand or salt for your deck or walkway is a great use. Rabbits and cavies like to use them for tunnels or hide-aways too. Don't worry if they chew or eat the cardboard (more fiber HA!) If you are feeding more than a few pets you might want to buy in bulk. Local health food stores are where I buy 50 lb. bags of it. If you can find a feed store or restaurant that will buy it for you, great! I transfer the oats from the heavy paper bag it comes in to a plastic covered tub. This keeps the oats fresh and dry. The bunnies get about a tablespoon on top of their grain.
Both the striped sunflower seeds and oatmeal are placed on top of the grain. Otherwise the rabbits will dig thru their food dish trying to get each morsel. This wastes the grain they drag out in the effort to get their "prizes".
I love the oatmeal for the babies. When transitioning from nursing to solid food, the babies will eat the oatmeal first. This is good for their tummies and digestive track. I first starting feeding oatmeal only to the babies when they start venturing out of the nestbox and into momma's feedbowl. Next I gave some to any bunny that appeared off feed. Then they were ALL clamoring for it, so what to do but let everyone enjoy it!
