A local feed store had a sale on sunflower " hearts" so we thought we'd give them a try. The "hearts" are just the seeds minus the hulls. We figured to save ourselves the "sorting" of grain from uneaten hulls. The feed store couldn't tell me if the sunflower hearts were from the striped or black oil sunflower seeds. Pricewise it is about $26. for a 50 lb. bag of striped seeds versus $19. for a 25 lb. bag of just the hearts.
Once we opened the bag, it looked like they were from the black oil sunflower seeds. We weren't sure if the bunnies would like them as they probably taste different from the striped. The bunnies have voted - NO! They don't like them as much, some bunnies won't eat them at all. So we will be bagging them up for my father-in-law's bird feeder and back to the store for the striped seeds!
Guess these Blackberry Farm rabbits are truly Mainer's. Like their human counterparts, who'd rather have lobsters in the shell and remove the lobster rmeat themselves than get the "lazy-man's clearmeat lobster" all shelled and ready to eat. We like a challenge!
