Please Treat Me Kindly
By Barbara Chambers
I was a cute little bunny, the day I was sold.
To a small little boy whose hands were so bold.
He loved me and squeezed me and held me so tight
God only knows of my terror and fright.
I struggled and squirmed for him to release me
He just held me tighter, till my tummy was queasy.
How could I tell him, my life was ebbing away
He was determined in his arms I would stay.
In one final struggle I tried to leap free
I clawed at the arms that were torturing me.
But my dilemma wasn’t over, I was captured and caged.
Taken to a strange place, I lay stunned and enraged.
Why couldn’t people see that I’m not just a toy,
To be given so freely to the hands of a boy.
We reached our destination, my home I did see,
I was put in a cage made especially for me.
I looked at the child and his eyes seemed to say,
I’m sorry little bunny, I didn’t mean to treat you that way.
He gave me a carrot and tickled my ears,
If you treat me this way, I could love you for years.
Treat me with kindness, don’t hold me so tight,
Give me plenty of water and feed me just right.
Don’t give me any lettuce, of this I’ve been told,
Keep me from drafts in the winter, so I won’t catch a cold.
Please always be gentle, I’m just a baby you see,
I knew he understood as he smiled warmly at me.
