This was a neat recycling project I saw posted. Someone took those big wooden spools that cables come on and made bird pens out of them. I wouldn't use them to house bunnies but they might make good playpens for outdoors. With the wooden floors, they wouldn't be digging or sitting in the dirt. You can see them at this website along with the instructions.

Showroom diorama So are shows getting smaller? They certainly are in these photos! This unbelievably detailed rabbit show room diorama was made by Laurie T. of NH. The showroom scene includes a show table with list of breeds, coop cards, trophies, rabbits, carriers and exhibitor's lunch. Even the ever present raffle table with bags of grain, shavings, puzzles, Christmas jar, and sign, all in miniature. Just for fun, see how many things you recognize. You can click on the photos to view them larger. The Awards Feedback contest winners are George E. and Amber G. Private email me your mailing addresses so I can send along a little something for your submissions. Thanks!
Here are a few photos from last weekend's snowstorm (2/8-2/9). Fortunately the snow wasn't piled up this high at the rabbitry front door. But..... the back door was another story. The snow drifted here and there, it isn't really this deep everywhere. We probably got 18 inches of snow, hard to tell with the wind blowing in every direction, it felt like in a snowglobe outdoors. Usually during winter storms you can face away from the wind, not so this storm, as it swirled all around you. Fortunately it wasn't a wet snow, very dry and fluffy. The strong wind blew the snow right thru the tiny holes in the window screens so many of the house windows and rabbitry windows had snow piled up INSIDE between the glass and the screen. I've never seen that happen before.
Talk about GERMAN Angoras!
I ran across a website with a very interesting article on Angora rabbits. It was about Nazi’s and Angora rabbits - what a combo, huh? A highly ranked SS Commander, Heinrich Himmler, wrote a book about raising Angora rabbits for their wool. Many of the death camps - Auschwitz, Dachau, Ravensbruck had rows and rows of rabbit hutches and pens. While the prisoners lived in squalor, these highly regarded rabbits were well fed and well cared for with large cages and clean pens. Of course, being kept by the Nazi’s, they were all White Angoras. (if available, they probably would have preferred blue eyed whites instead of red eyed whites). These animals were prized for their fur which was used in clothing. The wool lined coats for the Luftwaffe pilots and socks for the U-Boot crews and warm undergarments for the infantry in winter. It is believed that Himmler hid away his Angora Raising book when it became apparent that the Russian and American forces were closing in. He did not want his informative handbook falling into “enemy” hands. A few starving prisoners were promptly killed when caught stealing an Angora to eat. A war correspondent for the Chicago Tribune obtained this book. Eventually the Wisconsin Historical Society received it. It is not known how many copies may exist. To view the scanned photos of row upon row of rabbit hutches, German officers holding Angoras, the Angoras themselves, the grooming staff etc., visit this website, it is fascinating. All the pictures I’ve ever seen of concentration camps, never showed rabbits or hutches. To see more go to: www.wpr.org/news/angora.cfm A gal came to me last year for a holland lop doe to keep her bunny company. The youngster she chose (Charley) is definitely an extrovert and good thing as her little doe (LucyLu) is very laid back and can take the bossy-ness. They live harmoniously in a huge double tiered cage.
Neither doe is neutered and Charley being the independent doe that she is has started the process of wanting to build a nest. The only thing is that she is using LucyLu's fur to build one! Poor plucked LucyLu, talk about a friend who takes advantage of you! Last time she visited I gave her one of those little wooden tangerine boxes to see if one of the "girls" would enjoy it. Well, not just one enjoys it. LucyLu lays in the box and then Charley props her butt up on the corner and lays the rest of herself across LucyLu. These boxes aren't very big, have four little corner posts and are only about 3 inches deep. Try to picture it.... a true Muffin Top! |
