Nope, sorry this doesn't have to do with Holland Lops but may be of interest to show secretaries and exhibitors of other breeds. Now you can show - Blue Eyed White (BEW) Britannia Petite, Copper Mini Satin, and Blue/Chocolate/Lilac Siamese Mini Satin.

I read the monthly District 8 newsletter that ARBA District Director Terry Fender puts out. There is always some ARBA board activity or discussion that he shares plus articles. Since it is produced monthly it has more current news than waiting for the quarterly Domestic Rabbit magazine. Also, handy for folks in D8 are show calendars for each State to keep people informed about local shows.
Guess what? You don't have to live in District 8 to get this newsletter. Terry has 860 members subscribed to the newsletter. He says he would like 1,000 before his final term as D8 Director expires on September 15, 2016. So to help that along I'm posting about it here. Anyone not currently subscribed to visit the D8 website at www.arba.net/district/8 and sign up. Tell 'em I sent ya! Reading the newspaper yesterday and have seen TV news stories too that made me think to post this info for people that may be looking for a bunny or cavy (guinea pig) to adopt.
For a great variety of choices including ages, color or sex, check out the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society. https://www.facebook.com/gahumane They are in the Lewiston/Auburn area and have over 170 according to yesterday's newspaper article. Looking at their website (not Facebook page) they charge a mere $25.00 NEUTERED! That is a great deal. Apparently February is "Adopt A Rescue Rabbit Month". Or if looking for guinea pigs, in Kennebunk they recently took in 73 cavies. March is "Adopt A Rescue Guinea Pig Month". It is the Animal Welfare Society at http://animalwelfaresociety.org/adopt/adopt-small-animals/ I think mostly just males (boars) are available until they know that the females (sows) aren't pregnant. They also have rabbits if you are in southern Maine or NH. There will be a sale at the Blue Seal Feed Store at 876 Stillwater Avenue in Bangor, Maine next Saturday, Feb. 21st. This is $2.00 off the 40 or 50 lb. bags. If you live nearby or buy a lot, it could be worth the trip.
I love to think of new ways to repurpose regular everyday items into show awards. I recently came up with one that was so simple, I even surprised myself!
Many of us use sample size carpet pieces as grooming mats at the shows. It is such a no-brainer to me to bring carpets to every show, whether I am grooming an animal or practicing their posing. It always amazes me when people don't bring a carpet but expect to use someone else's grooming table. Worse still when they don't ask permission and just plunk their animal down and leave "whatever" little gift their rabbit "dispenses" behind. Please don't set your animals on another person's grooming table without permission, it is plain rude. Also don't use your own carrier's wire top without a carpet. A broken toenail or worse can result. Carpets are cheap, buy one! If you value your animal enough to think it show worthy, treat it that way. These awards are for the 2/14 CCRBA show to be held in New Gloucester, ME. it is pre-entry with a 2/11 entry deadline. These are regular household dish mats embroidered with the award name. I was looking at them in a store and thought..... AWARDS! They are light, not likely to snag a toenail like some carpets and the best part is the ease of cleaning them. That is the one downfall of some grooming carpets, they are hard on washing machines. The dish mats are also absorbent since that is their main purpose when used "properly" to drain wet dishes on. They may appear to be mousepad size but they are not. It's just the photo angle to get them both in the picture. If you can find a club member who can machine embroider, these make very reasonably priced awards. Ours were done by my good friend in Iowa, Deb Levisay. She may be even making some with an embroidered hopping bunny or can customize for interested exhibitors. If you are one of them, email me for her email address. I'd love to hear of other award ideas. Trophies are nice but something you can use is even better, IMO Many of us use bleach to disinfect rabbitry things like countertops, nestboxes and cages. I didn't know until recently that bleach, like most things, expires. Bleach starts to lose its potency at 6 months at a rate of 20% per year. From now on I'll be marking the date bought on the bottle.
A few other bleach facts to consider. Don't mix it with an ammonia based cleaner. It can lead to deadly fumes or even explosion. Rabbits' sense of smell is about 10 times greater than ours. So you can imagine how sensitive they are to it with their delicate respiratory system. Bleach is very corrosive. Just ask your hands after using it! Wipe down surfaces, even metal surfaces with water as it can eat a hole through stainless steel. |
AuthorHoping to share the rabbitry happenings & thoughts. Also HINTS that I hope will help you and your rabbits.
