The article stated that contrary to popular belief, pets bought as gifts stayed with their original owners a high 86% of the time. I think that is a good thing.
I struggled with this story though as the new pet was a tiny 8 week old kitten being given to a 3 year old child during the excitement of Christmas morning. Hopefully the child's mother gave pre-approval and has an interest in cats and their care because this is going to fall to her to do.
Thank goodness cats are a bit sturdier than rabbits and less likely to be injured in a drop. A 3 year old's little hands aren't equipped to hold a young, struggling animal. Scratches and tears are likely I imagine, though neither the child's nor the animal's fault.
People are more drawn to a baby animal than a predictable adult. "Cute" wins over established personality traits. It would seem better to take the child to a shelter, let her see and interact with the potential pet and choose a good fit for all concerned An adult animal, familiar with young children would seem a better choice. If the child is given the choice of choosing the pet, they are more likely to bond with it and claim it as their own.
The article stated that more and more shelters are taking this approach, delivering on Christmas Day. Maybe Valentine's Day deliveries will follow and people will give their "Honey a Bunny"?? Personally I hope not!
