Another hot Saturday! Cleaned pans this a.m. Soon the cages will need an outdoor-burn-the-hair-off cleaning as the bucks out there are really letting loose with their fur. They are all called Lava now because they are "molten". Flipping thru the TV channels and caught a glimpse of Harry Potter where the Phoenix bird bursts into flames to be born again from the ashes. That is almost like what these senior bucks do. They look sad, very feathery and wispy haired about to burst into something and then poof they are reborn with a brand new coat. Just wish it would happen faster. We dampen a paper towel and drag it across the cage floor to pick up the shed fur, remove and rinse the water and food dishes twice a day and give them a papaya tablet to help prevent wool block. Other than that and taking them out and grooming what will come out easily, that's about all you can do. I've found the latter, grooming, is what speeds up the process the most. Always make sure they have plenty of hay as that will help trap the fur and hopefully move it thru their system.
